Articling & Summer Students
|
We believe that students represent the future of our firm; the best way to develop strength is to build from within. To that end, we expend
considerable effort in recruiting promising summer and articling students. Our aim is to hire the most talented people with the right balance of advocacy, legal, and interpersonal skills, with a view to them one day becoming our partners.
If you are a student with a litigation preference, and you are considering employment possibilities with Canadian law firms, either for a summer job or for articling, there are important reasons why you should look to McCague Borlack LLP in Toronto:
1. Experience
At our cutting-edge law firm in the central hub of Toronto’s downtown “ Bay Street” business community, students have a chance to gain an enviable background in advocacy in civil litigation and alternative dispute resolution (ADR).
At some other firms, students are expected to do little more than research, while the lawyers enjoy the more interesting work, such as courtroom appearances. Our students are exposed to all facets of the litigation process, from the initial client meeting to attendance at trials and appeals. They regularly accompany lawyers to discoveries, mediations, arbitrations, pre-trials, and trials. Articling students at McCague Borlack LLP are expected to work hard, but they are also rewarded for their diligence and skills. For example, our students are given motions and carriage of Small Claims Court matters, up to and including trial, to handle independently. They also get to see files from start to finish.
We value and foster the independence of our students. However, we also assign an articling principal for guidance and to ensure that each student is fully and properly trained and supervised to maximize his/her career potential. Students are also given the opportunity to work with all associates and partners, thereby broadening their exposure to a wide range of legal issues and experiences.
2. Hire-Back Rate
We have one of the highest hire-back rates in the profession. Many of our associate lawyers started with our firm as summer students and articling students.
While some firms base their willingness to hire on the volume of files available, that’s not how we work. Almost always, if someone has talent and drive, we’ll hire them – and then find the work for them to do.
3. Social Aspects
Our firm has an informal working environment that facilitates the development of strong professional and personal relationships. A big part of success in law comes through informal interaction, and social events are a major aspect of life at McCague Borlack LLP. Special lunches, parties, and evening events are also part of our Right Balance philosophy – working hard while engendering a sense of community and enjoyment in our careers.
