Gary obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree from McGill University, and his Bachelor of Laws from the University of Toronto. He obtained a Master of Laws degree in Constitutional Law in 1990, and a second Master of Laws degree in ADR in 1998, both from Osgoode Hall Law School. In 2005, Gary completed the arduous examinations of the Institute of Chartered Arbitrators of London, thereby obtaining a Diploma in International Commercial Arbitration (DipICArb). Gary has been an adjunct Professor of Law at Osgoode, teaching both Civil Procedure and Dispute Resolution. He is also a Sessional Lecturer in Civil Procedure at Queen's University, Faculty of Law in Kingston Ontario. Gary was selected by his peers to be included in the 2009 edition of The Best Lawyers in Canada in the specialty of Alternative Dispute Resolution.

Gary has spoken about and taught both advocacy and ADR to clients, professional groups, and other law firms. He has also published extensively in other areas of the law and is a frequent teaching coach for the Advocates Society , Toronto.

Gary was called to the Bar in 1980, and joined  McCague Borlack LLP as a partner in 2003.
