FIRST EXPANSION OFFICE - OTTAWA

McCague Borlack LLP opened its first office outside of the GTA in the fall of 2012. The office is centrally located in the Sun Life Financial Centre in downtown Ottawa, the Nation’s Capital, which is on the shores of the Rideau River in Eastern Ontario. Address, Directions & Map.

Ottawa Managing Partner - Martin Smith

A 2001 year of call, Martin Smith was a partner in McCague Borlack's Toronto office for a number of years and is now the managing partner of the firm’s Ottawa office. Martin moved his family to Ottawa during the summer of 2012 where they now reside permanently. Martin practices civil litigation, specializing in the areas of employment law, human rights, professional liability, personal injury and subrogation.

Since opening the Ottawa office, a number of lawyers, from the Ottawa area have joined Martin (below in order of call to bar):

  1. Joseph Griffiths, a civil litigator since 2002 and counsel to our Ottawa office, is routinely retained by corporations, non-profits, individuals, and government to represent their interests in simple and complex litigation.
  2. Nawaz Tahir is a Partner and a 2002 year of call. From the Court of Appeal to the License Appeals Tribunal, from representing various insurers in the Toronto Propane class action to having one of the first successful catastrophic impairment decisions at the LAT, Nawaz has appeared at and had success at all levels of Courts and Tribunals in Ontario.
     
  3. James M. Brown, Partner and a 2003 year of call, has developed considerable experience in first party insurance claims for accident benefits and disability insurance. James regularly represents insurers on disputes over; the entitlement and quantum of income replacement benefits; determinations of catastrophic impairment; and claims for bad faith.
     
  4. Jennifer Beresford is an associate and 2005 year of call. Her expertise lies in both the defence of insurance claims and in the area of insurance coverage. She understands every facet of insurance law and shares her experience in writing and speaking engagements and participating in seminars for her clients.
     
  5. Annette Uetrecht-Bain, Partner and a 2008 year of call, has considerable courtroom experience having appeared before the Ontario Divisional Court, Ontario Superior Court of Justice, Financial Services Commission of Ontario and at appeals before the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board.
  6. Jennifer Kelly, Partner and a 2012 year of call, practices in the areas of transportation, occupiers’ liability, products liability, personal injury law and insurance coverage. Prior to becoming a lawyer, Jennifer spent three years in Moscow working as an International Programs Consultant.
     
  7. Nancy Sadek, Partner, is a double bar, bilingual and specialized insurance lawyer who joined MB as a Partner. As a seasoned litigator, Nancy has frequently appeared before all levels of the provincial and federal courts in both Quebec and Ontario. 
     
  8. Douglas Treilhard, Partner and a 2014 year of call, joined the firm after articling as a judicial law clerk for the Superior Court of Justice in Toronto and practicing for several years in Thunder Bay.
     
  9. Dennis Molnar, called to the bar in 2014, is Chair of the firm's Family Law group. His practice has a focus on custody/ access litigation, support and property litigation, property law/property disputes, estates litigation, and personal injury.
     
  10. Alexander Hartwig, Associate and a 2015 year of call, has experienced insurance and plaintiff-side litigation, bringing knowledge of both sides to his insurance litigation focus.
     
  11. Alex Robineau, Partner and a 2016 year of call and fluently bilingual, joined the Ottawa office as an Associate, in September 2016. During his articling term with the firm, he was fortunate to act as a junior in the course of two trials, allowing him to gain valuable litigation experience at an early stage in his career.
     
  12. Matthew G.T. Glass, Associate and a 2016 year of call, a results-oriented litigator for businesses and individuals in civil, commercial, regulatory, and enforcement proceedings, at the trial and appellant level.
  13. Victoria Locs is a 2017 YOC  associate with a focus on accident benefits and insurance-related issues. Clients can expect thoughtful advice on how to put their best foot forward in any given case.
     
  14. Matthew Chomyn is a 2018 YOC, with a broad litigation practice, his experience includes claims for property and casualty, subrogation and priority disputes.
     
  15. Filip Szadurski, a 2021 YOC, is a civil litigation associate with a passion for all things employment law. He prides himself on thorough, efficient, and effective representation for all his clients.
     
  16. Tess Doane, a 2022 YOC, returned to McCague Borlack as an associate after successfully completing her articles with the firm in 2022. She maintains a broad litigation practice with an emphasis on civil and commercial litigation, employment law, and insurance defence. 
     
  17. Petra Sbeiti, a 2022 YOC, has a general civil and commercial litigation law practice. Petra's primary focus is civil litigation which includes motor vehicle collisions, slip and falls, product liability, property loss, and subrogation. 
     
  18. Sandra White, a 2022 YOC, is a successful marketing and technology professional who has morphed her experience and business acumen into her law practice.
