Sophia practices civil litigation with an emphasis on insurance defence and is focused on personal injury and accident benefits. Prior to joining McCague Borlack, Sophia worked in the area of personal injury for a Plaintiff litigation firm which provided her with insight into both sides of a litigation case.
Also working at the Department of Justice, with Health Canada on their litigation team, Sophia handled many research projects, and drafted memoranda of law on Charter challenges. Her articles at a boutique law firm gained her an overview of many aspects of general practice including civil litigation and corporate law. She is considered an excellent communicator, which has contributed to her skills in building great client relationships.
In 2010, Sophia was licensed in the State of Michigan. She also successfully passed the New York Bar Examination and was sworn in to the bar in 2016. Sophia is bilingual; fluent in French and English.
While attending Law School, Sophia participated in the All-School Moot Court Competition where she ranked 8 out of 100 students and went on to represent Michigan State University in the National Trial Advocacy Competition where she further honed her courtroom and advocacy skills. As a student instructor, Sophia taught concepts of Criminal and Constitutional Law to high school seniors.
Summer, being her favourite season, is when she can relax with family at the cottage and enjoy fishing, kayaking, or reading a good book--likely a true crime story.
As physicians become more at ease in prescribing marijuana for medical purposes, it is reasonable to forecast an increase in the number of employees in the workplace with a prescription for the drug. This raises challenges for employers that have a duty to accommodate their "disabled employees" and further conflicts with an employer's desire for a drug-free environment.
